An Earful of Pressure

November 29th, 2005 · 5 Comments

I am what is known to some folks, a sounding board. I don’t remember when it started, or how it did, but I always seem to have people telling me personal things. It’s because I don’t share any of it. I refuse to.

However, I am an empathetic person… sometimes their worries and stresses become mine. I shouldn’t do that, but I do.

Tonight was one of those nights, and I’m left feeling…well, I don’t know. I wish I didn’t know anything about the situation.

Why the hell choose me? I think that perhaps I should feel honored, but at times, I feel intense pressure.

Why in the world do I have to be such a good listener?

Why do you think I talk so much? It prevents everyone but those closest to me from thinking I actually pay attention.

Trust me – it works ALMOST every time.

As for you – you’re just such a nice boy. *grin*

there are a$$holes. There are users. There are biggots. There are martyrs.

And then there is you, who has to just be himself. And we appreciate you for that.

    Thanks for listening.

Ok, I promise not to call unless I’m really really desperate for a sounding board… but you have to promise to not bleed so much next time we hang out.

If you will notice, people tell you things because you actually listen… period. I’d be willing to bet that when they get to know you, they tell you things because they know you will not insert your own conversation into their mono-log. Gives them more scope to pour everything out on you.

I know… I talk a lot (not as much as Tammi… but a lot *grin*) so I’m not the “good listener” for the person who wants to have all the attention focused on them and their troubles. Unfortunately, while there are some people you don’t mind listening to… most of the people who pour out their innermost thoughts, are people who should keep their mouths shut!

I have sometimes been the listener, and heard more than I really wanted to. I’m the quiet type, too. It’s a little bit of a curse, ain’t it?
