Engineers

April 14th, 2009 · 34 Comments

I don’t blog much about work… mostly. Occasionally, I may mention something, but obviously it’s not too much.

I wish I could.  Damn, do I wish I could…

I’ll just say this: Someday, when I grow up and get big, I’m going to be an engineer, so I can look down my nose at those folks who actually know something. And I’ll design shitty equipment without fear of ramifications.

Now, I’m not talking about all engineers… I’ve talked with Bou about this before.

I’m just talking about our elite crew of parchment waving perfectionists.

    Cool . . . and I thought lawyers got a bad rap . . . “Boing!”

  • 2 Graumagus // Apr 14, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Worse than at the last place you and I were co-employed at?

  • 3 Tammi // Apr 15, 2009 at 2:34 am

So are you saying engineers are higher on the “shit list” than sales people? 😉

And speaking of that…I’ve never heard you “exclude” ANY sales folk from your “charming liar” list……

    huh

  • 4 T1G // Apr 15, 2009 at 2:59 am

Dude… the senior engineer at the Big Blue Weenie has got nothing on these guys. (And J always was easy to deal with.)

And the ratio of engineers to floor employees is totally different, too:
    BBW = 2:85 or so
    New Place= 14:27

  • 5 T1G // Apr 15, 2009 at 3:01 am

    Um… it’s a sales person’s job to be a charming liar? :)

  • 6 LeeAnn // Apr 15, 2009 at 6:08 am

I thought it was a politician’s job to be a charming liar?

  • 7 Graumagus // Apr 15, 2009 at 9:54 am

Dude, you half as many engineers as production line employees?!?!?! That’s fucking insane!
We have ONE (and he’s a good guy).

  • 8 Tammi // Apr 15, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Huh. Then I must suck at my job, cause I can’t lie for shit!

  • 9 Jerry in Indiana // Apr 15, 2009 at 9:23 pm

    Wow, T1G,
You just about have your own personal engineer. I would have long discussion with him about raising hogs, well water, and septic tanks. I’ll bet he has a lot to contribute.

When we did our SAP implementation we had a whole building full of Arthur Andersen kids. I told our management that I wished we were as smart as AVIS. They won’t rent a car to a kid until he’s 25, yet we gave them carte blanche to run our project. I also kept asking when the short yellow bus was coming to pick them all up and take them away.

    Have fun with it.

Tammi, I wonder how many peope will believe your last comment. In other words, I wonder how many people don’t know you…. ;P

  • 11 Retired Navy CPO // Apr 17, 2009 at 8:02 am

Education doesn’t make you smart. I can show you many an Aviator to prove my point.

  • 12 Tammi // Apr 18, 2009 at 7:17 am

    Ha Ha Zonk………..

And I *LOVE* Jerry’s comment. Too True Dude. Way too true.

Back in the day….before you “ran” a project you actually had to know how to RUN it.

Oh, and T1G? I meant to wish you luck on that whole thing. Holy Moly. I’m sure that’s pushin’ the envelope on your patience! 😉

    Sorry. Got. Damn typos.

  • 21 becky // Apr 19, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Guns… There will be guns to shoot. Idea, we can use Mark for target practice..

  • 22 Bou // Apr 19, 2009 at 6:23 pm

Oh, oh, oh. So our company is laying off like crazy. All the guys who design shit. My group, however, has not been touched yet as we’re the engineers who fix the shit they designed after it’s out in the field.

Upper management is all incredulous that my group hasn’t been touched. So far… we have some cloak around us and our contracts. Meanwhile their precious design engineers are dropping like flies.

I told my boss, “The guy with the stick in his hand (pilot) and the guy with the wrench, could not give a shit who designed his turbine airfoils. He only wants to deal with the guy who can fix his problem.” That would be my group…

  • 23 Bou // Apr 19, 2009 at 6:24 pm

And, any engineer who doesn’t listen to the guy who uses his equipment should be walked out. And the door locked behind him.

    That frickin’ pisses me off…

  • 24 Bou // Apr 19, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Which brings me to the question I posed to an engineer once, when I first got hired and he was being a prick. “So, were you born an asshole and so you became and engineer or did they teach you how to be an asshole in engineering school? This is a modified chicken/egg scenario”. He was aghast.

    Ok. I’ll stop now.

    /rant off.

Guns… There will be guns to shoot. Idea, we can use Mark for target practice..

    Yabbut…I shoot back…

    :oD>

Engineers, I think, are a lot like architects…some good ones like Bou that are very few and far between…

  • 26 Anna // Apr 20, 2009 at 3:51 pm

LOL.. why do I get the feeling that T1G isn’t paying attention to y’all? Damn that guy… someone needs to whoop his ass, but good

  • 27 JihadGene // Apr 20, 2009 at 7:30 pm

I tend to ignore engineers but I do love locomotives.

  • 28 Abbadon // Apr 22, 2009 at 2:47 am

    WELL???

  • 29 T1G // Apr 22, 2009 at 3:16 pm

    Timmy is stuck there…

  • 30 Cappy // Apr 22, 2009 at 5:42 pm

Heh, don’t waste your time with them sliderule jockeys. Come over to the software side. No knowledge or smarts needed, just step right into Project Management. All you need to do is blather on about SixSmegma, TotalledQuality, OffWhoring, or AgileProgramming and you’re in like Flynn!

  • 31 Abbadon // Apr 23, 2009 at 3:22 am

    Timmy is stuck there…

    Hahahahahahahaha!!!! Call Lassie…

And it’s such a deep subject for such a shallow mind…

    :oD

You coming to the blogmeet or not?

  • 32 becky // Apr 24, 2009 at 5:10 am

I guess your ass will be stuck in the well come July? Oh well…..

  • 33 JihadGene // May 3, 2009 at 6:01 am

Get out on the bike today!

  • 34 Kelly // May 14, 2009 at 11:50 am

LMAO! You ought to talk to the senior chief about this sometime…we deal with engineers all the time……all kinds of engineers. Knew a guy that had three different engineering degrees, one of them nuclear, yet still went to grab a bushing he had just burned off with the supertorch. Thank God for the three “stupid people” that grabbed him.
